Ronaldo was the hardest player I ever managed – Capello
Fabio Capello has revealed that Brazil legend Ronaldo De Lima, is the most difficult player he ever managed.
The duo worked together at Real Madrid, but Ronaldo struggled with injuries, primarily to his knee, while Capello was in charge between 2006 and 2007.
Although Capello complained about Ronaldo’s fitness, the Italian boss suggested that he was the most talented player he had ever worked with.
“The most difficult to handle was the best I coached: Ronaldo, il Fenomeno,” he told Football Italia.
“I’ll tell you why. I was in charge at Real, he came back from an injury and come to us in November to restart.
“He weighed 96 kilos, boxing stuff. I asked him how much he weighed when he won the World Cup and he said 84kg, so I asked him to at least get to 88.
“It was a shame, he didn’t want to make the smallest sacrifice and the best he managed was 94kg. He played three games in partnership with [Ruud] Van Nistelrooy and we lost all three.”
Capello has not officially retired as a manager, although he has not worked since he was sacked as Russia coach in 2015.
