Controversial Indian spiritual leader sentenced 20yrs for rape of two followers

A controversial Indian spiritual guru Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for rape in India.

Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh who is the spiritual head of a sect Dera Sacha Sauda was convicted for raping two of his followers in a case that dates back to 1999.

He was flown to court Friday by helicopter to avoid followers from gathering  outside.

He was sentenced to two consecutive 10-year terms, one for each conviction.

Security forces are on high alert in the northern Haryana state after supported were engaged in deadly protest following his conviction.

At least 36 people were killed  Friday and hundreds more injured as his followers rampaged setting fire empty train carriages and burning cars.
