After the political turmoil in Zimbabwe the country is basking in the euphoria of a new era as former vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa 75 has formally been sworn in as the new president.
Mnanagagwa is to serve the remainder of Mugabe’s tenure before election next year.
He took the oath office Friday at the 60,000 capacity national stadium in Harare even as former president Robert Mugabe was give immunity from prosecution and also granted his wish to remain in the country for the remainder of his life.
Mugabe who had resisted pressure to resign resigned on Monday while the process for his impeaching was about to begin.
Mnangagwa had earlier called for calm ahead of his inauguration; “As the president-designate, I greet you all in the name of our country and our nation. As you are aware, in the last few months leading to this day, the political situation in our country has been quite fluid culminating in the resignation of the former head of state his excellency RG Mugabe. We are currently working on transitional arrangements which will lead to the dispensation that is to unfold tomorrow,”
“While this is going on, I implore all Zimbabweans to remain patient and peaceful and desist from any form of vengeful retribution. It is not in the spirit of ubuntu which characterises the nature of our people.”
